The difference between the two gallons trips people up constantly. A UK imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres and a US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres, so the British gallon is about twenty per cent larger. A car quoted at 40 miles per gallon in the United States would be about 48 miles per UK gallon for the same fuel use.

British fuel is sold in litres but economy is still quoted in miles per gallon, which is why this conversion appears on every forecourt calculation. To turn litres per 100 km into miles per gallon, divide 282.48 by the litres per 100 km figure.
