How do you convert kg to stone and pounds?

Convert the kilograms to pounds first, then split the pounds into stones of 14. Going through pounds avoids the decimal-stone trap described in the next section.

  1. Find the total pounds. Divide the kilograms by 0.45359237 (or multiply by 2.20462). 75 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 165.35 lb.
  2. Find the whole stones. Divide the pounds by 14 and ignore anything after the decimal point. 165.35 ÷ 14 = 11.81, so 11 whole stones.
  3. Work out the leftover pounds. Multiply the whole stones by 14 and subtract. 11 × 14 = 154, and 165.35 − 154 = 11.35 lb.
  4. Write the answer. 75 kg = 11 st 11.3 lb, or 11 st 11 lb if you round to the nearest pound.

Work through pounds, take out whole stones of 14 lb, and what remains is the pounds figure.

Why is 11.81 stone not 11 stone 8 pounds?

Because the digits after the decimal point are a fraction of a stone, and a stone has 14 pounds, not 10 or 100. Dividing kilograms by 6.35 gives a correct answer in decimal stones, but reading “11.81” as “11 stone 8” or “11 stone 81” mixes two number systems.

To rescue a decimal-stone answer, multiply only the decimal part by 14: 0.81 × 14 = 11.3 lb. The same applies the other way. Half a stone is 7 lb, so 12.5 stone is 12 st 7 lb, not 12 st 5 lb. This single slip is behind most of the confusing figures people get from a calculator.

When do you need to convert kg to stone in the UK?

Mostly when a reading in kilograms has to be compared with a weight you know in stones. Clinics, hospitals and many gym machines work in kilograms, while plenty of people still track their own weight at home in stones and pounds. Converting puts both readings on the same footing.

Remember that different scales can disagree by a little, and weight naturally varies through the day. When comparing, use the same scale at a similar time if you can. If you are monitoring weight for a health reason, the NHS BMI calculator accepts either unit, and your GP or practice nurse can advise on what the figures mean for you.
