Quick answer: A UK (imperial) pint is exactly 568.26125 millilitres, which most people round to 568 ml. That is 20 UK fluid ounces, or just over half a litre. A US pint is smaller at about 473 ml, so a British pint holds roughly 95 ml (about 20%) more than its American namesake.
The pint is one of the few imperial units still in everyday British use, from the pub to the doorstep milk delivery. This page gives you the exact figure, a quick converter, a printable chart and the reasons recipes and labels sometimes disagree. ml= UK pintsHow many ml are in a UK pint exactly?
One UK pint is exactly 568.26125 ml. The figure is fixed in law: Schedule 1 to the Weights and Measures Act 1985 defines the pint as 0.56826125 cubic decimetre, and a cubic decimetre is one litre. Because the definition is exact, you never need more decimal places than the five shown here.
The formula is simple:
- Millilitres = pints × 568.26125
- Pints = millilitres ÷ 568.26125
Worked example: an old family recipe for a beef stew asks for 1½ pints of stock. Multiply 1.5 by 568.26125 to get 852.39 ml. In practice you would measure 850 ml in a metric jug; the 2 ml difference will not change the result. For a more general tool covering every volume unit, use the site’s volume converter.

Why is a US pint smaller than a UK pint?
A US liquid pint is 473.176473 ml because it is built from a smaller gallon and has fewer ounces. The US system kept the old English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, while Britain adopted the larger imperial gallon in the 1820s. The UK pint is one-eighth of 4.54609 litres; the US pint is one-eighth of about 3.785 litres.
The ounces differ too. A UK pint contains 20 UK fluid ounces of 28.41 ml each, while a US pint contains 16 US fluid ounces of 29.57 ml each. So the American ounce is slightly bigger, but there are four fewer of them. If you are following an American recipe, our ml to fluid ounces converter lets you choose UK or US ounces.
| Measure | UK (imperial) | US customary |
|---|---|---|
| 1 pint | 568.26 ml | 473.18 ml |
| Fluid ounces per pint | 20 | 16 |
| 1 fluid ounce | 28.41 ml | 29.57 ml |
| Pints per gallon | 8 | 8 |
| 1 gallon | 4.546 L | 3.785 L |
Where is the pint still used in the UK?
The pint remains a legal unit of trade for draught beer and cider and for milk in returnable containers. Section 8 of the Weights and Measures Act 1985 limits its use as a primary unit of trade to those cases. Everywhere else, the metric quantity must lead, although a pint figure can still appear alongside it.
- Pubs and bars. Draught beer and cider must be served in ⅓, ½ or ⅔ pint, or multiples of ½ pint, according to trading standards guidance. A full pint glass is therefore 568 ml of liquid, measured by a stamped glass or meter.
- Milk. Doorstep deliveries in glass bottles are sold by the pint. Supermarket plastic bottles are labelled in litres first, but the sizes are still based on 1, 2, 4 and 6 pints, which is why you see unusual volumes such as 1.136 L.
- Wine. Since 19 September 2024, still and sparkling wine can be sold in 568 ml bottles, according to GOV.UK guidance on permitted wine quantities.
- Recipes and conversation. Older British cookbooks list liquids in pints and fluid ounces, and many people still think of milk and beer in pints.
How many pints are in a litre?
One litre is about 1.76 UK pints. Divide 1,000 by 568.26125 and you get 1.7598. A handy rule of thumb is that a litre is “a pint and three-quarters”. For bigger volumes, such as a water butt or a fuel can, the litres to gallons converter is quicker, since eight pints make one gallon.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using 500 ml as a pint. Half a litre is 68 ml short of a UK pint, about 12% less. It is fine for a rough guess but not for baking.
- Mixing UK and US pints. An American recipe that asks for “1 pint of cream” means 473 ml, not 568 ml. Check where the recipe was written.
- Reading the jug at an angle. A measuring jug viewed from above can easily be out by 20 ml or more. Read jugs at eye level on a flat surface.
- Assuming a cup is half a pint. A US cup is about 237 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml; neither is half a UK pint (284 ml).
